Senior Picture Checklist for Guys: What to Bring to Your Senior Photos

Not sure what to bring to senior pictures? Preparing for senior photos doesn't have to mean packing your entire bedroom—or spending hours figuring out what to wear.

A little senior photo preparation ahead of time can make your session more relaxed and give you plenty of options once you're in front of the camera. The goal isn't to bring a ton of stuff. It's to bring a few outfits, details, and personal items that feel like you.

What to Bring to Senior Pictures

Start With a Few Good Outfits

For most senior photography sessions, you'll want about 2–3 complete outfits. Think variety rather than bringing five versions of the same T-shirt.

A good mix might include:

• A casual everyday look
• A favorite outfit that feels most like you (layers work well)
• A slightly dressier option (structured/formal clothing looks great on guys!)
• A school or college-related look
• An outfit that fits your personality, hobby, or the season

You don't need to completely reinvent your style for senior pictures. If you normally wear jeans and sneakers, that's perfectly fine. If you live in polos and chinos, bring those. If a button-down and jacket feels more like you, include that. If you're a t-shirt and shorts kind of guy...opt for a plain colored t-shirt WITHOUT large logos. And no neon colors please. Shorts are fine but pants generally look better in photographs...except sweatpants. Those you may want to leave at home. 😂

The best senior photos are the ones where you look—and feel—like yourself and distraction-free.

Make Sure Everything Fits

This may sound obvious, but fit matters more than the brand or price of your clothes.

Before your senior photo session, try everything on. Make sure shirts aren't pulling across the chest, pants aren't too loose or too tight, sleeves are the right length, and jackets sit comfortably.

Pay attention to collars, cuffs, and shirt hems, too. Clothing that constantly needs adjusting can make it harder to relax in front of the camera.

And if you've recently grown six inches in what feels like five minutes, definitely check those pants and sleeves before session day.

Bring the Right Shoes

Don't forget the shoes.

Your shoes can completely change the feel of an outfit, so bring the pair that actually belongs with each look. Sneakers may work perfectly for a casual outfit, while boots or dress shoes may make more sense for something more polished.

For outdoor Michigan senior pictures, I'd also recommend bringing comfortable shoes for walking between locations.

If we're photographing at Kensington Metropark, Island Lake Recreation Area, or another park with trails, fields, or natural terrain, you don't necessarily want to spend the entire session walking around in your nicest dress shoes.

You can change into the shoes you want for the actual portraits once we get where we're shooting.

Pay Attention to the Details

Small details show up in photographs.

Bring the accessories you normally wear, such as:

• A watch
• Belt
• Hat
• Sunglasses
• Jacket
• Tie
• Necklace or other jewelry

If you wear glasses every day, wear your glasses. Your senior pictures should look like you—not like a version of you who suddenly decided to stop wearing them for an hour.

And don't forget to empty your pockets before we start shooting. Bulky wallets, keys, phones, and random pocket items can create unnecessary bumps and distractions.

Bring Something That Represents You

This is where your senior session can become much more personal.

You don't need a bunch of props, but if there's something that represents an important part of your life right now, bring it.

Maybe it's:

• A musical instrument
• Sports equipment
• A favorite book
• A college sweatshirt
• Something connected to your future career
• A hobby
• Your car
• A meaningful family item
• Your dog

It doesn't have to be something dramatic. Sometimes the most meaningful photographs come from the things that are simply part of everyday life.

And no, your senior pictures don't have to revolve around sports. If you're not an athlete, there's absolutely no reason to force a sports-themed photo into your session.

Don't Forget the Grooming Details

You don't need a complicated grooming routine for senior pictures, but a few simple things can make a big difference.

Come to your session with clean, styled hair and bring whatever you normally use to keep it looking good. A comb, brush, or small amount of hair product can be helpful for touch-ups.

Make sure to SHAVE the morning of. Unless of course facial hair is part of your everyday look.

Also pack deodorant, lip balm, and any other personal grooming products you may need.

If you're getting a haircut, try not to schedule a dramatic new haircut immediately before your senior photo session. A few days gives your hair time to settle and lets you make sure you actually like it.

What to Bring for Outdoor Senior Pictures in Michigan

Many senior photography sessions around Brighton, Dexter, South Lyon, Howell, and Metro Detroit take advantage of Michigan's beautiful outdoor locations.

That means your packing list may need to include a few things beyond your outfits.

If we're photographing in a field, flowers, tall grass, or wooded areas, bring:

• Comfortable walking shoes
• Water
• Bug spray
• Deodorant
• A small snack
• Lint roller
• Tissues
• Hair product
• An extra shirt if needed

And yes—bring the bug spray.

Michigan summers are beautiful, but mosquitoes don't care that you're trying to take senior pictures.

Locations such as Kensington Metropark near Milford, Island Lake Recreation Area near Brighton and South Lyon, and Gallup Park in Ann Arbor offer beautiful natural settings for senior photos, from open fields and trails to wooded areas and waterfront scenery.

A little preparation means you can enjoy the location instead of spending your session swatting at bugs.

Think About the Location When Choosing Your Clothes

Your senior picture location can also help determine what you bring.

For a natural session at Kensington Metropark, you might choose outfits with earthy colors and textures that work well with fields, trails, and wooded backgrounds.

For Gallup Park in Ann Arbor, you may want a casual look that works well with the park's trails, greenery, and waterfront scenery.

If we're shooting around downtown Brighton, City of Detroit or another more urban location, a dressier outfit, jacket, or clean sneaker may create a completely different look.

There isn't one "right" outfit for senior pictures. Think about the location, your personality, and the overall look you want your photographs to have.

The Night Before Your Senior Photos

Don't wait until the morning of your session to discover your favorite shirt is wrinkled or your shoes are covered in mud.

Take a few minutes the night before to:

• Try on each outfit
• Steam or iron your clothes
• Clean your shoes
• Check that everything fits
• Gather your accessories
• Empty your pockets***
• Pack your grooming products
• Check the weather
• Charge your phone
• Pack bug spray for an outdoor Michigan session

Then stop worrying about it.
