Fall Family Photos in Michigan: The Best Time for Family Portraits, What to Wear & Where to Go

(Livingston, Washtenaw & Oakland County, MI)

There’s something about fall in Michigan that makes it almost impossible not to want updated family photos.

The leaves begin to change, the summer heat finally gives way to cooler temperatures, and the landscape becomes filled with warm golden, orange, red, and earthy tones. Add soft evening light and cozy layers, and you have one of the most beautiful seasons of the year for outdoor family photography in Michigan.

If you’ve been thinking about scheduling fall family photos in Michigan, September and October are an especially beautiful time to plan a session. Whether you’re looking for family photography in Brighton, Ann Arbor, Howell, Dexter, South Lyon, Hartland, or throughout Metro Detroit, there are countless outdoor locations that make beautiful backdrops for family portraits. And there’s another reason fall is such a popular time for family photos: your images can be ready just in time for holiday cards, gifts for grandparents, and updating the family photo hanging on your walls.

Why Fall Is One of the Best Times for Family Photos in Michigan

Michigan gives us something pretty special in the fall: VARIETY. One week you might have beautiful green fields and the first hints of changing leaves. A few weeks later, the landscape can be filled with vibrant color. That means your family photos can have an entirely different feel depending on when and where we photograph your session.

1. The fall colors are beautiful

Michigan's trees provide a natural backdrop of gold, amber, orange, red, and deep green. Parks, trails, fields, and wooded locations can all look completely different during autumn. The exact timing of peak color varies from year to year, so I don't recommend choosing a date based solely on a particular "peak color" prediction. Instead, we can choose a location and session date with the season in mind and make the most of whatever Michigan gives us.

2. The temperatures are more comfortable

Let's be honest: getting everyone dressed, out the door, and ready for family photos is enough work without adding 85-degree temperatures and humidity to the equation. Fall's cooler weather makes outdoor sessions much more comfortable for parents, kids, and pets. It also gives you the opportunity to wear layers, sweaters, boots, jackets, and other textures that photograph beautifully.

3. The light can be gorgeous

Fall's golden-hour light combined with warm foliage can create beautiful, dimensional portraits. For many outdoor family sessions, I prefer photographing during the later part of the day when the light becomes softer and warmer. This also gives us an opportunity to move around the location and use several different backgrounds instead of standing in one spot for the entire session.

4. Your photos can be ready for the holidays

If you've been meaning to update the family photo for your Christmas or New Year's cards, fall is the perfect time to do it. Scheduling your session early enough in the fall gives you time to select your favorite images, design your cards, and have everything ready before the holiday rush. And if you're planning to give framed family portraits or photo albums to grandparents, fall photography gives you plenty of time to create something meaningful before the holidays.

Beautiful Locations for Fall Family Photos in Southeast Michigan

One of my favorite parts of family photography is choosing a location that feels like your family. You don't necessarily need a dramatic or complicated location. Sometimes the best family photos happen on a quiet trail, in a field, near a creek, or in a place where your kids have room to explore. Here are a few beautiful options throughout the Ann Arbor, Brighton, Dexter, and Metro Detroit areas.

Matthaei Botanical Gardens in Ann Arbor

For families who love gardens, nature, and a more curated outdoor setting, Matthaei Botanical Gardens in Ann Arboroffers a beautiful variety of natural surroundings. The gardens and surrounding nature areas provide opportunities for greenery, trails, plants, and architectural elements, making it possible to create several different looks without traveling between locations. It can be especially beautiful for families who want something a little more polished than a traditional field or wooded trail. (Always check current garden policies and photography requirements when planning a professional session.)

Kensington Metropark

Kensington Metropark is one of my favorite types of locations for families because it offers so much variety. With Kent Lake, wooded areas, trails, fields, and open spaces, Kensington gives us plenty of opportunities for both classic family portraits and more playful images. It's also a great option for families who don't want every photograph to look like a traditional posed portrait. We can walk, explore, play, snuggle, and let the kids move while I photograph the interactions happening naturally.

Mill Creek Park in Dexter

If you love the idea of fall family photos in Dexter, Michigan, Mill Creek Park offers a completely different feel. The creek, trails, bridges, and surrounding natural scenery give us opportunities for photographs that feel relaxed and connected to the environment. It's also close to downtown Dexter, which means a session can have a little bit of a natural, small-town feel rather than looking like every other park portrait.

And Don't Be Afraid to Think Beyond the "Typical" Park

Some of my favorite family sessions happen in locations that aren't necessarily the first place you'd find on a Google search.

Depending on your family's personality and the look you're going for, we can consider:

  • Wooded trails
  • Open fields
  • Lakeshores
  • Quiet country roads
  • Downtown areas
  • Private properties
  • Local farms
  • Gardens
  • Parks throughout Livingston County
  • Locations around Brighton, Howell, Hartland, South Lyon, Dexter, and Ann Arbor

The goal isn't simply to find a place with pretty trees.

The goal is to find a location that gives your family room to interact, move, and be yourselves.

How to Get Natural Family Photos Instead of Stiff Poses

One of the biggest questions I hear from parents is: "What if my kids don't know how to pose?"

Good news: they don't have to. In fact, some of my favorite family photographs happen when nobody is looking directly at the camera. Rather than asking everyone to stand in a straight line and smile for an entire session, I use a combination of gentle posing, prompts, movement, and interaction.

You might be asked to:

  • Walk together holding hands
  • Let the kids run toward you
  • Give someone a giant hug
  • Whisper something silly in your child's ear
  • Pick up your little one
  • Spin or dance together
  • Walk down a trail
  • Have a race
  • Toss leaves
  • Snuggle together
  • Tell your child a secret
  • Give everyone a "family squeeze"
  • Let the kids explore while the adults interact
  • Look at each other instead of the camera

These aren't random activities just to keep everyone busy. They're prompts designed to create genuine interaction. And that's where the magic happens. Instead of worrying about whether everyone is smiling at exactly the same time, we're creating opportunities for real expressions, laughter, connection, and personality. I'll still guide you into beautiful portrait positions when needed. But you won't spend your entire family photography session standing perfectly still and wondering what to do with your hands.

What if your kids aren't cooperating?

That's okay, too. Kids are kids. Someone may need a snack break. Someone may want to run. Someone may decide that family photos are absolutely not happening today. The goal isn't to force children into perfect behavior for an hour. Sometimes the best response is to let them move. A child running through the leaves, laughing with a sibling, holding Mom's hand, or climbing into Dad's arms can create a much more meaningful photograph than a perfectly posed smile. My job is to photograph your family as you are while still creating polished, beautiful portraits you'll be proud to display.

What to Wear for Fall Family Photos

After "Where should we take our photos?" the next question is almost always: "What should we wear?" The good news is that you don't need everyone in matching outfits. In fact, I recommend coordinating rather than matching. Start by choosing a color palette that works well with the season and then build each person's outfit around it.

Fall Family Photo Color Ideas

Some beautiful fall-friendly combinations include:

  • Cream + camel + denim
  • Olive + tan + ivory
  • Rust + cream + brown
  • Navy + cream + camel
  • Burgundy + taupe + denim
  • Sage + beige + warm brown
  • Terracotta + oatmeal + dark denim
  • Charcoal + cream + muted green

You don't have to use all of these colors. Choose two or three primary colors and then add variations in shade and texture.

Add texture

Fall is the perfect season for texture. Textures add visual interest without requiring everyone to wear a bold pattern.

Think:

  • Knit sweaters
  • Cardigans
  • Denim
  • Corduroy
  • Suede
  • Wool
  • Quilted jackets
  • Boots
  • Scarves
  • Layered dresses

Start with one outfit you love

If Mom has a dress, sweater, or outfit that she feels amazing in, start there. Then build everyone else's clothing around that piece. This is often much easier than trying to coordinate four or five outfits simultaneously.

Don't be afraid of neutrals

Cream, ivory, tan, camel, brown, taupe, denim, charcoal, and muted greens photograph beautifully against Michigan's fall landscape. And they won't compete with the colorful leaves.

Coordinate instead of matching

The days of everyone wearing identical white shirts and jeans are behind us.

Instead, think: similar tones + different textures + individual personality. You want the outfits to feel connected without making everyone look like they're wearing a uniform.

What should you avoid?

I generally recommend avoiding:

  • Large logos
  • Neon colors
  • Extremely bright athletic clothing
  • Clothing with distracting graphics
  • Too many competing patterns
  • Everyone wearing exactly the same color
  • Anything uncomfortable or difficult for your kids to move in

And most importantly, don't put your child in an outfit they absolutely hate just because it looks good on Pinterest. Comfort matters. If your child is uncomfortable, they're much less likely to relax in front of the camera.

When Should You Book Fall Family Photos in Michigan?

Fall is one of the busiest seasons for family photographers, so I recommend planning ahead if you have a particular weekend, location, or timeframe in mind.

September and October are especially popular for fall family photography in Michigan, and the most desirable dates can fill quickly.

If your goal is specifically to photograph colorful fall foliage, keep in mind that Michigan's fall color timing changes every year depending on weather and location.

That means flexibility can be helpful. Rather than waiting until the leaves are already changing to book your session, reach out early and reserve your preferred timeframe. Then we can keep an eye on the season and choose the location that looks best when your session date gets closer.

Family Photos Don't Have to Feel Like a Chore

Let's face it: convincing the entire family to get dressed, get in the car, and show up for pictures can feel like a lot.

But your session doesn't have to be an hour of:

"Stand here."

"Smile."

"Look at the camera."

"Okay, do it again."

Instead, think of your family session as an opportunity to slow down for a little while:

Walk together.

Laugh.

Snuggle.

Let the kids be silly.

Hold hands.

Play.

And yes, we'll make sure we get those beautiful everyone-looking-at-the-camera portraits, too.

But we'll also create photographs that remind you what this particular season of your family actually felt like.

Because your kids won't always be this little.

They won't always want to hold your hand.

They won't always fit perfectly in your arms.

And eventually, "family photos" will look very different than they do right now.

That's why it's worth documenting this version of your family.
